Habitat House

AGING IN PLACE HOUSE - HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Location: Sonora, CA
Size: 900 sf, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom homes
Status: Building Department Review

Project Description: These homes will provide a safe and adaptable environment for seniors to age in the comfort of their homes. The walls and spaces were designed based on the turning radius of a wheelchair and safe movements for the elderly and physically challenged. Utilizing 3d concrete printing technology, the walls can be specifically designed to meet the organic shapes of peoples movements throughout the home.

Large glass windows and sliding doors are provided throughout the house to bring natural light in to the interiors and offer views to nature, which are proven biophilic principles for the elderly to maintain a good quality of life and enhanced overall well-being.

To encourage the elderly to stay healthy and active, concrete planters are provided around the perimeter of the house where the residents can grow their own vegetables and flowers, while getting fresh air and having opportunities to mingle with their neighbors. The planters were specifically designed at bench height to provide a place for the residents to stop and rest when moving around the house.

These aging in place homes are located at the center of a larger Habitat for Humanity development, which includes 32 duplex houses.
